Schema markup for catteries

Cattery schema markup, with an example to copy

A cattery uses LocalBusiness, with a description that says cats only, a nightly price for each kind of pen, and your heated sleeping areas and covered runs in amenityFeature. Add your drop-off and collection times and a map link, since catteries are often hard to find on a first visit.

The type to use

LocalBusiness

LocalBusiness, the same type a boarding kennel uses: schema.org has nothing for cat boarding. What marks you out as cats only is your name, description and a catalog that contains nothing but cat stays.

What to include

The properties that matter for catteries

Most important first. Fill in what's true for you and leave out the rest; every value must also be on the page.

description
The one place in the markup to say “cats only, no dogs on site”, as your homepage says it. It's often why owners pick a cattery over kennels.
hasOfferCatalog
Single pen, family pen for two cats from the same home, and three sharing, each priced per night with UnitPriceSpecification.
amenityFeature
Heated sleeping areas, covered runs, shelves at different heights, a garden outlook: each a LocationFeatureSpecification, and only those you have.
openingHoursSpecification
When owners can bring and collect cats. If you close at midday so the cats stay settled, give morning and afternoon as separate entries.
address
Your full address with its postal locality, which may be the next village rather than the town you say you're “near”.
hasMap
A link to a map or directions page. Catteries tend to sit at the end of long drives, and owners arrive with a cat carrier and no wish to take a wrong turn.
telephone
The number owners ring to book a viewing or check summer dates.
sameAs
Your Facebook page, where owners see photos of the pens and of cats in residence.

Example

Copy, then make it yours

This is the markup for a made-up business. Replace every value with your own before you use it.

  1. Change every name, address, number and link to your own, and delete lines that don't apply.
  2. Paste it into your site's header code (website builders call it “code injection” or “custom code”), or let ServiceCited add it for you.
  3. Check it with Google's Rich Results Test or the Schema Markup Validator.

Watch out

Mistakes catteries make with markup

  • “Pet boarding” in the description

A generic description hides the very thing cat owners search for. If you take no dogs, say “cats only” in the description and in the tagline you use under your name.

  • Two cats sharing priced as one

If a family pen is priced per pen, an offer called “Cat boarding, $32” leaves owners of two cats guessing. Name each pen by how many cats it takes and price it as you charge it.

  • Viewing hours as opening hours

Afternoon viewings aren't the same as drop-off times. Put only the hours owners can bring and collect cats in the markup, and write the viewing slots on the page.

FAQ

Catteries: markup questions

Type to search these questions, or ask anything about getting found on Google and AI.

Should pen sizes go in the markup?

In the offer's description, matching the page: “heated sleeping area 1.4 m by 1.2 m with a 2 m covered run”. That's easier for owners to compare than a separate feature for each measurement.

We board the odd rabbit. Does that break “cats only”?

It changes what's true: no dogs, but not only cats. Say “cats and small pets, no dogs” on the page and in the description, and add the rabbit stays to the catalog.

We're near a town but not in it. Which locality goes in the address?

The one on your postal address, even if it's a village few people know. Mention the town they do know in the description, such as “ten minutes from Gosford”.
