Schema markup for boarding & kennels

Boarding kennel schema markup, with an example

Use LocalBusiness with your full address, the times you take dogs in and hand them back, a nightly price for each kind of stay, and your licence as hasCredential. Facilities such as heated kennels and covered runs go in amenityFeature, so they're stated as well as photographed.

The type to use

LocalBusiness

Kennels, catteries and home boarders have no type of their own, and the overnight types schema.org does have (Hotel, BedAndBreakfast and the rest of LodgingBusiness) describe stays for people. LocalBusiness is the accurate fit.

What to include

The properties that matter for boarding & kennels

Most important first. Fill in what's true for you and leave out the rest; every value must also be on the page.

hasCredential
Your boarding licence: what it covers, who issued it and its number, exactly as on the certificate. In England that's your council; elsewhere, whatever your council or state issues, if anything.
openingHoursSpecification
The drop-off and collection windows, one entry per window, rather than the hours someone answers the phone. Owners plan their journeys around them.
specialOpeningHoursSpecification
Days you don't hand dogs back, such as Christmas Day and Boxing Day, with opens and closes both set to 00:00 to mark them closed.
hasOfferCatalog
Nightly prices by dog size, two dogs sharing a kennel and any cat stays, each with “per night” as the unit.
amenityFeature
Heated kennels, covered runs, a separate cat block: each a LocationFeatureSpecification set to true, and only the ones you have.
address
The full address with postcode. Owners drive out to you, often down lanes they've never used.
geo
Coordinates for your gate, because a rural postcode can cover several farms and sat navs pick the wrong one.
telephone
The kennel office number, which owners ring to check dates before the school holidays.
sameAs
Your Facebook page, where you post updates and photos of boarders.

Example

Copy, then make it yours

This is the markup for a made-up business. Replace every value with your own before you use it.

  1. Change every name, address, number and link to your own, and delete lines that don't apply.
  2. Paste it into your site's header code (website builders call it “code injection” or “custom code”), or let ServiceCited add it for you.
  3. Check it with Google's Rich Results Test or the Schema Markup Validator.

Watch out

Mistakes boarding & kennels make with markup

  • Hotel because the sign says dog hotel

Hotel brings properties such as checkinTime and starRating that search engines read as a hotel for people. A “dog hotel” is still LocalBusiness; keep the phrase in your name or description if that's what you're called.

  • The council's stars as aggregateRating

A licence star rating comes from an inspection, not from customers, and aggregateRating means customer reviews. Write the rating as text on the page, exactly as on your current licence.

  • Office hours instead of drop-off times

If you answer the phone from eight till six but only take dogs in at set times, 08:00–18:00 in your markup has owners turning up at lunchtime. Give each window its own entry.

Also worth adding

  • FAQPage: On your before-you-book page, if it answers vaccination, packing and cancellation questions in visible text.

FAQ

Boarding & kennels: markup questions

Type to search these questions, or ask anything about getting found on Google and AI.

We take cats in a separate block. One business or two?

One, if it shares the name, address and phone number: add cat boarding to the catalog and the cat block to amenityFeature. A cattery with its own name and entrance can have its own block on its own page.

Should the licence number go in the markup?

Yes, if it's on the page: put it in identifier inside hasCredential, matching the certificate character for character, and change it when the licence is renewed.

We charge more in August and at Christmas. How do we show that?

Either keep the standard nightly price in the catalog and explain peak pricing on the page, or add a second price with validFrom and validThrough dates. Don't leave last year's dates in.
